Fence types compared for Jacksonville yards
Five materials, one decision. Start with what the fence has to do: screen a yard, keep a view open, enclose a pool or hold pets. The material follows from there, and your Jacksonville fence contractor confirms it on site.
Side by side
Cost is shown as relative position, not as a number. Every yard prices differently, so the figure comes from the on-site estimate.
| Material | Privacy | Maintenance | View | Pool barrier | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Full | Highest | Blocked | Possible as a solid barrier | Lowest of the privacy options |
| Vinyl | Full, or semi-private profiles | Lowest | Blocked on privacy panels | Possible as a solid barrier | Higher than wood |
| Aluminum | None | Low | Preserved | Yes, in a barrier configuration | Higher than chain-link |
| Wrought iron and steel | None | Moderate | Preserved | Scoped on site | Highest ornamental option |
| Chain-link | None | Low | Preserved | Scoped on site | Lowest overall |

- I want to stop seeing my neighbors
- Solid screening at residential height, in wood or vinyl. Compare the two on the outcome, not the product.
- Compare privacy fence outcomes
- I want the lowest up-front cost for privacy
- Wood, most often stockade or shadowbox, with the trade-off being long-term upkeep.
- See wood fence styles
- I never want to maintain a fence
- Vinyl. It costs more the day it goes in and asks for nothing afterward.
- See vinyl fence options
- I do not want to lose my pond or preserve view
- Ornamental aluminum, which encloses the yard while keeping the sightline open.
- See aluminum fence options
- I have a pool and need a barrier
- Most often aluminum in a barrier configuration with self-closing, self-latching gate hardware.
- See pool barrier fencing
- My yard has never been fenced
- Start with the property line, the HOA submission and the permit. The material decision comes after.
- See how a new installation works
- My current fence is failing
- A full tear-out and rebuild, with the old fence hauled away. Repair-only work is not something we take on.
- See what replacement covers
Choosing a fence type
Wood privacy is what most established neighborhoods already have, vinyl is the common upgrade at replacement time, and aluminum dominates pond, preserve and pool lots. All three are routine work here.
Yes, and on water-view lots it is the standard build: privacy on the neighbor sides and ornamental aluminum along the water. It is quoted as one project.
Answer two questions: how long you plan to stay, and whether you are willing to maintain the fence. Wood wins on up-front cost, vinyl wins on upkeep. The privacy fence page walks both outcomes through in detail.
We install wood, vinyl, aluminum, wrought iron and steel, and chain-link, for new installations and complete replacements. Repair-only work is not offered.
